What makes a man?
An age old question
Those who know its answer
Can’t explain, only comprehend
It isn’t the size of manhood
Abundance of his possessions
Or skills that he hones
The measure of the man is deep
It is difficult to see, harder to quantify

Pay attention to how he speaks
How he handles his anger
When he believes he is alone, what does he do?
Who he makes time for
His priorities
It is how the man chooses to be that measures him
I will set the ruler for my own measures.

It is how I treat women that quantifies
How I’m there for my kids that counts
Where I let my gaze linger that shows
And how I hold myself in check that reveals
Not what I do, but why I choose to do it
Do I use love, fear, hate, or pain? Different tools for different men
And time. Where do I spend it? That is the real payoff.
Periods of unhappiness, do I grow or do I dwindle?
Most importantly of all, who is God to me?

Men too shallow, governed by instinct
Do not know how to be great, but understand greatness
They know deep down and strike out against others
Be still, understand them. Feel no pity or shame. Just know.
Every man has a chance to be great.
It is a choice, a right.
For us to take.

So let us treat women well and with long suffering. Care and not abuse.
Be present for children. Be yourself. Show them a father’s love.
Linger your gaze on the person that matters. Your lover.
Be angry, but control yourself. Do not let yourself be violent or hurtful
Choose to be good. Choose to be happy. Choose to be positive.
Use love, not fear. Use pain to learn. And do not hate.
Spend your time with God, family, friends, and by yourself. Prioritize them.
Grow from hard times, do not shatter, but bend. A palm tree to a hurricane.
And make sure that you walk next to God. Not in front, not behind, but hand in hand.
This is the measure of a man. The deep ravine that flows within those that are He. Within us all.
